Public School Systems – Elementary & Secondary – K-12
Centennial Public Schools – Tim DeWaard - Superintendent – 402.534.2321
Centennial Public Schools serves over 525 students in a consolidated facility
in Utica resulting in a teacher to student ration of 1:12. A 320
square mile district includes Gresham, Thayer, Waco, Beaver Crossing, Cordova,
and Utica and surrounding areas. Voters recently passed a $4.7 million
bond issue for construction of a new theater, as well as upgrades to the
fire system and safety features. Courses include: industrial,
building and trades, business, and language.
Approximately eighty percent of the Centennial School District's high school students take the ACT Test, with an average score of 22.8. It is estimated that 95 percent of the eighth grade students finish high school, 75 percent of the graduating seniors pursue a college degree, and 25 percent of the seniors enter the job market immediately after graduation.
Cross County Public Schools – Randy Page, Superintendent – 402.764.2156
Cross County encompasses over 177 square miles with an enrollment of over
360 students and a teacher to student ratio of 1:12. Construction
is currently underway for a new pre-K – 12 facility located at the
intersection of Highways US 81 and Nebraska 66, which will serve students
in the Benedict and Stromsburg communities and surrounding areas. Completion
is scheduled for July 2008 and will provide the capabilities for robotics
training and distance learning. Courses include industrial technology,
building and trades, business, language, and a strong fine arts department.
More than 80% of Cross County students take the ACT with an average score of 21.4. Seventy-five percent of graduating seniors attend college upon graduation, while the remaining twenty-five percent move directly into the workforce.
Heartland Public Schools – Norm Yoder, Superintendent – 402.723.4434
Heartland Public Schools includes students from the Bradshaw, Henderson,
and Lushton communities and surrounding rural areas. Over 155 square
miles are in the district serving 341 students for a teacher to pupil ration
of 1:12. All students will be consolidated under one roof at the
Henderson facility beginning the 2007-2008 term.
Vocational courses include agriculture technology and drafting. A wide variety of classes is also available via the distance learning lab.
Approximately 99 percent of eighth grade students finish high school, 95 percent of the graduating seniors pursue a college degree and 5 percent of the graduating seniors enter the job market. Over 90% of the students take the ACT with an average score of 22.4.
McCool Junction Schools – Curtis Cogswell, Superintendent – 402.724.2231
The McCool Junction School District covers 76 square miles and serves
248 students with a teacher to student ration of 1:10. A new community
learning center with 6 rooms and a common library will open in the fall
of 2007. Classrooms will have state of the art technology including
smart boards. Most of the high school classes will base out of this
new facility. The new facility has been funded through private donations. The
vocational ag program is strong with a full time instructor devoted to
the district.
Eighty percent of the McCool Junction high school students take the ACT Test, with an average score of 21. Eighty-eight percent of graduating seniors attend college, with the remaining 12 percent entering the labor market.

Covering over 100 square miles, the York School District serves over 1,245
students with a teacher to student ratio of 1:12. The new $9.5 million
middle school facility for grades 6-8 will be used for the first time in
August 2007. The 77,640 square foot facility is designed for the
middle school concept. An early education program to provide opportunities
for 4-year olds in collaboration with York County Head Start will also
begin in the fall. The district offers an alternative education program
for grades 6-12, called the enrichment center and employs distance learning
opportunities and state of the art technology.
Eighty-nine percent of the high school seniors attend some form of higher education and the average ACT score is 22.1
Private School Systems – Elementary and Secondary - K-12
Nebraska Lutheran High School – Craig Charron,

Within the Waco village limits, there are two Christian parochial schools:
Nebraska Lutheran High School (9-12) and Trinity Lutheran Elementary School
(K-8) serving 73 students for a 1:7 teacher to student ratio. In
2001, the Nebraska Lutheran campus was expanded to include a new gymnasium,
computer lab, library, science lab, music center, and other classrooms. The
campus also has a dorm facility that houses students from Nebraska and
surrounding states such as Texas, Arkansas, Kansas, South Dakota, and Utah. Beginning
in the fall of 2007, Nebraska Lutheran will welcome International students
to their student body.
Over 95% of the graduates will go on to a two or four year college with 5% moving directly into the labor market. Over the last 5 years, Nebraska Lutheran graduates have consistently achieved higher than state and national averages on the ACT test. Trinity Lutheran Elementary is now housed in a new facility, which is located within one block of the high school.
Private Elementary School Systems

Larsen Christian Academy is a K-8 State approved educational facility
in York. Student enrollment of fewer than 20 students allows a teacher
to pupil ratio of 1:7. Scholarships are available in addition to
participation in the York Middle School band and sports programs.
Fifty percent of the students score above the median on nationally standardized tests and graduates have a solid academic record boasting two National Merit Scholars, over 35% in York High School National Honor Society, and many others on the Honor Roll.
Emmanuel Faith Lutheran School – 402.362.6575
Emmanuel Faith Lutheran School offers schooling from preschool through
grade eight for boys and girls of all religious backgrounds. Each
grade is taught by a teacher who holds a specialized degree from a college
or university and is certified by the Nebraska Department of Education.
Over 119 students are enrolled for a teacher to pupil ratio of 1:12. Students also have the use of the York Public School bus system.
St. Joseph Catholic School – 402.362.3021
St. Joseph Catholic School provides education in grades Kindergarten through
eight to 126 students for a teacher to pupil ratio of 1:9. Curriculum
is in compliance with the state of Nebraska requirements for non-pubic
schools. St. Joseph also provides competitive sports for students
in grades 6-8.
A Guardian Angel Fund provides tuition assistance. Students also have the use of the York Public School bus system.

Special Educational Opportunities
York Community Education – 402.362.6700
York Community Education program is a joint project of the York Public
Schools and Southeast Community College in Lincoln, Nebraska. Its
five major components are Adult Education, Adult Basic Education, Children’s
Programming, Building Use, and York Resource Council.
Adult Education provides instruction in areas that allow individuals to upgrade their present job skills, train for new careers, develop recreational and cultural interests, or earn college credit.
Adult Basic Education will assist individuals in obtaining their GED and English as a Second Language (ESL) certification. These classes are free to individuals in the community.
York Community Education and the York County Health Coalition partnered to bring the nationally known Girls on the Run program to York. The program focuses on educating third through eighth grade girls on developing a healthy self-image and discovering a life that is free of the girl box where they can say, “I belong just the way I am.”
The office schedules community activities for the middle school. The York Resource Council is a communication vehicle for area agencies and organizations.
York County UNL Extension – 402.362.5508
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension in York County delivers research-based
education and information to citizens throughout the county. The
wide range of educational programs, delivered via a variety of methods,
are offered through a federal, state and county partnership arrangement. Some
program focus areas include: Water quality and quantity, On Farm Research,
Environmental programs, Health and Wellness programs, Food Safety, Guardianship
and Parenting programs, Value Added Agriculture, Livestock and 4-H Youth
Development. The objective is to provide programs and other educational
resources locally.
The staff of extension educator and extension specialists, technicians,
and support personnel specializes is providing programs throughout York
County. The 4-H Youth Development Program reaches more than 420
youth in York County alone.
Epworth Village, Inc. – 402.362.3353
Epworth Village, Inc. is a non-profit, family-centered treatment agency
located in York and Grand Island for children dealing with severe emotional
and behavioral disorders. Annually, the staff of 150 full and part-time
employees serves roughly 160 boys ages 7 to 18 and approximately 400-plus
family members. Epworth Village operates six residential treatment
facilities, the Epworth Village Learning Center and Day Treatment Program. Epworth
began in 1889 as Mother’s Jewels Home orphanage and boasts a proud
118-year history serving children across the state and nation. Several
volunteer mission opportunities are available at Epworth Village and tours
are offered.

Grace Children’s Home provides residential care for as many as 20
youth who are not able to live with their families. The mission of
Grace Children’s Home is to provide care, nurture, and special guidance
and direction using a distinctly Christian approach to child care.
Mosaic – 402.362.2180
Mosaic provides individualized services, living options, work choices,
spiritual nurture and advocacy to people with disabilities in more than
250 communities across 14 states and Great Britain. Mosaic's staff
and supporters believe in the worth of each individual who has a disability. Mosaic
advocates with them so they may choose appropriate services, defend their
rights and express their opinions.
Mosaic offers supported living for clients that are able to live alone in the community and has 2 community based facilities in York housing 17 clients. Mosaic offers supported employment at various job sites in the community providing job coaches and support. Mosaic has a supported workshop which enables the clients to learn job skills to help them grow and maintain a job in the community. Mosaic operates the York recycling center and picks up recyclables in and around the community and also supports surrounding communities through recycling trailers.
In York, Mosaic also provides residential services, in-home supports, and respite care. Mosaic in York is part of a national and international affiliated social ministry organization of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, a recognized service organization of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod and a member of Lutheran Services in America."

Region V Services York is a community based rehabilitative training agency
for 58 people who experience developmental disabilities in Seward, York,
Fillmore and Thayer Counties. Region V Services is a political subdivision
serving people with developmental disabilities and similar needs in southeast
Nebraska
The mission of Region V Services is to provide desired training and supports that promote interdependence and relationships within the community and lessen reliance upon agency services. These services include a full range of supports from job coaching and in home supports to workshops where individuals work on contracts and live in residential settings that are staffed at all times.
Region V provides education and opportunities so that people make informed choices and experience desired outcomes. The agency supports people in developing interdependent lifestyles by emphasizing personal relationships and community involvement.
Colleges and Universities

York College, founded in 1890, is a private liberal arts college affiliated
with the Churches of Christ in York, Nebraska.
York College is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and offers over 40 bachelor degrees including those in business, education, music, psychology, religious studies, and science.
The student-to-faculty ratio is a comfortable 12:1, the average class size 22. The student body of 450 students represents most U.S. states, as well as Canada and many other countries.
The York Panthers compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Division II and the National Christian College Athletic Association, and provide organized sports teams in 3 women's and 4 men's categories.
For extracurricular activities, York's students can choose among eight social clubs, seven athletic teams, five performance groups, four Christian outreach groups, three literary publications, and a range of intramural sports.

Southeast Community College includes three campuses (Milford, Lincoln, and
Beatrice) and more than 20 off-campus sites in 15 counties. In addition
to our campus locations, SCC serves 15 counties located in southeast Nebraska
with courses operated through the College Continuing Education division. Counties
included in the SCC service area are Saunders, York, Seward, Lancaster,
Cass, Otoe, Fillmore, Saline, Thayer, Jefferson, Gage, Johnson, Nemaha,
Pawnee and Richardson. The general College Administrative Offices
are located at 301 S. 68th Street Place in Lincoln.
Southeast Community College offers almost 50 career/technical and Academic Transfer programs. All programs are accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association, and many are also have special accreditation in their fields.

Central Community College is a multi-campus community college serving a 25
county area in central Nebraska and offering 33 career and technical education
programs with a focus on degree, diploma and certificate programs requiring
two years or less to complete. The college also offers an academic
transfer program for students who want to complete the first two years of
a bachelors degree before transferring to a 4-year college or university. In
addition, the college offers classes in communities, online teaching, and
training and development for businesses, industries and other organizations.
Central administration is located in Grand Island. Three main campuses are located in Columbus, Grand Island, and Hastings. Additionally, CCC uses a variety of distance learning techniques to provide educational services.
