Police Protection

The York County Sheriff’s Department, housed in the York County Courthouse, employs 10 sworn officers and 14 support personnel. A full 911 dispatch area is accompanied by deputy stations, evidence room, and conference room. The York County jail is a lock-down facility with a maximum capacity of 34 inmates. The jail has its own commercial kitchen, with all meals prepared on-site. Other features of the jail include an exercise area, library, laundry facilities, detox cell, and visitation room.

The sheriff’s department utilizes vehicles equipped with on-board cameras and state-of-the-art Breathalyzer/testing equipment. All law enforcement personnel are equipped with bullet-proof gear and carry state-of-the-art weaponry. Members of the sheriff’s department have been extensively trained in drug awareness and enforcement, HAZ-MAT, interrogation, and many other areas. The sheriff’s department provides regular patrol to local industries, checking security sites, entrances, and exits on a rotating basis.

An extensive upgrade of the county’s 911 system and the installment of a Global Information System was completed in 2006. A new communications tower was erected in 2005, enhancing emergency communication for the area by extending the county’s capabilities.

Fire Protection

Fire protection is provided in York by 14 full-time and 28 volunteer fire personnel located at one fire station. The York Fire Department provides fire protection for the city of York and approximately 96 square miles surrounding the city through an inter-local agreement with the York Rural Fire District. The fire insurance classification inside the corporate limits is 4, outside the corporate limits it is 7. Other municipalities in York County also have volunteer fire departments that respond to their respective communities and surrounding areas.
