York County welcomes advanced manufacturing

16 Feb 2015

If manufacturing is the process of turning raw materials into consumable goods, what is advanced manufacturing? According to a report to the White House by the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, advanced manufacturing is …

“a family of activities that (a) depend on the use and coordination of information, automation, computation, software, sensing, and networking, and/or (b) make use of cutting edge materials and emerging capabilities enabled by the physical and biological sciences, for example nanotechnology, chemistry, and biology. This involves both new ways to manufacture existing products, and especially the manufacture of new products emerging from new advanced technologies.” http://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/microsites/ostp/pcast-advanced-manufacturing-june2011.pdf

York County prides itself in having a high number of advanced manufacturing businesses that continually strive to be innovative. Many of them are also concerned with creating “clean” processes that result in fewer waste and air emissions. Jobs in the advanced manufacturing sector tend to pay well, making them attractive to potential employees.
