Why York County Update
Lisa Hurley, CEcD

The past couple of months have been an exciting time for York County and the York County Development Corporation (YCDC), marked by significant progress and the launch of new initiatives that underscore our commitment to economic growth and community development.

In July, we proudly launched our revamped website. This revamp was designed to achieve our mission and goals while supporting our businesses, workforce, and communities. This new platform offers enhanced features and easier navigation, making it a valuable resource for businesses, site selectors, and residents alike. The timing couldn’t have been better as we continue to promote York County as a premier destination for businesses and families.

August saw us celebrating the success of our "SizeUp York County" tool, which is helping small businesses and entrepreneurs access crucial market data. This initiative underscores our dedication to fostering local business growth by providing the insights necessary to make informed decisions. Small businesses are the backbone of our economy, and tools like these empower them to thrive in today’s competitive landscape.

The Bosselman project, a newly constructed Pump & Pantry, is poised to make a significant impact. Bosselman Enterprises, a key player in the Nebraska economy, is making strides with its new venture in York County and has already started construction. This project will enhance our interstate business district, increase the sales tax base, and further position York County as a hub of economic activity stimulating future projects.

Additionally, October is Manufacturing Month, and YCDC has several exciting events planned. On October 4th, we will be hosting Manufacturing Tours for local students and local leaders, providing them with a firsthand look at career opportunities in our community. Participants will visit Farmer’s Cooperative, Green Plains, and Collins Aerospace, gaining valuable insights into three different industries. We’re also coordinating the Manufacturing School Visits program, where local manufacturing employers will visit several schools in the area to educate students about careers in their field.

Another exciting development is the launch of the SPARK Pitch Contest, part of our broader efforts to foster entrepreneurship and innovation in York County. This contest invites local entrepreneurs and small business owners to pitch their innovative business ideas for a chance to win up to $3,000. The contest is designed to ignite creativity and provide the financial support necessary for promising ideas to flourish. We believe this initiative will boost local businesses and contribute to the overall economic vitality of our community. Participants are invited to meet with professionals to work on their business plan, pitch, or anything else to prepare during open hours at a Pitch Workshop on October 15th. Spark Pitches will then be made to judges on October 25th. You can learn more about this exciting opportunity here. Thank you to the following sponsors for supporting this event. They are listed by level of sponsorship here: Central Valley Ag (CVA), Cornerstone Bank, Henderson State Bank, Midwest Bank, Union Bank & Trust, York State Bank | Advance Services Inc, York General | Chances R Restaurant & Catering, Collins Aerospace, Kopsa Otte + Associates LLC, Overland Ready Mix, Southeast Community College, Wendy's | Ayars & Ayars, H&R Block, and York Dental Associates.

We are also gearing up for the York University Career Fair. This event is an excellent opportunity for local businesses to connect with students and job seekers. Scheduled for November 12, the YU Career Fair will feature booths from various employers, offering insights into available positions and career paths. Students are also offered an opportunity to participate in an employer round table focused on career exploration. Registration for the Career Fair is now open, with free booths available to YCDC investors and a nominal fee for non-investors. This is a great way to attract new talent to your business and to showcase what careers York County has to offer.

As we move into the fall, we remain focused on our strategic priorities—talent development, business expansion, and housing growth. These areas are critical as we strive to make York County the preferred choice for businesses and families in the region.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to work together towards a brighter future for York County! Also, please continue to listen and share the 17-County Podcast, found on any Podcast listening platform.
