Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervision:

Oversee all operations of the Public Works Department, including maintenance, construction, and utility services under the direction of the Village Board. 

  • Planning and Coordination:

Develop long-range plans for the department's needs, coordinate projects with other village departments, and ensure compliance with relevant regulations. 

  • Budget Management:

Prepare and manage the annual budget for the department, ensuring responsible spending and adherence to financial constraints. 

  • Maintenance and Repair:

Oversee the maintenance and repair of village infrastructure, including roads, utilities, parks, and buildings. Must have the ability and knowledge to operate heavy machinery and equipment.

  • Customer Service:

Address resident complaints and concerns related to public works services and ensure timely and efficient responses to issues. 

  • Project Management:

Manage and oversee public works projects, from planning and design to construction and completion.

  • Safety:

Ensure a safe work environment for all employees and contractors and comply with all applicable safety regulations. 

  • Community Relations:

Interact with the community, elected officials, and other stakeholders to promote effective communication and collaboration. 

Qualifications

Required Skills and Qualities:

  • Leadership and Supervision: Can work independently, and to motivate, direct the utility assistant.
  • Planning and Organization: Strong ability to plan, organize, and prioritize tasks. 
  • Problem-solving: Ability to identify and resolve issues effectively. 
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively convey information to diverse audiences. 
  • Technical Knowledge: Understanding of public works principles, construction practices, and relevant regulations. 
  • Budgetary Skills: Ability to prepare, manage, and monitor budgets effectively. 
  • Customer Service: Ability to handle resident inquiries and complaints with professionalism and efficiency. 
  • Interpersonal Skills: Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with colleagues, contractors, and the community. 
  • Education:  High school graduates at a minimum, and any combination of experience and training will apply.
  • Special Requirements: Must become certified as a Class IV Water Operator and Wastewater. Training paid for by the Village.
  • Benefits: Insurance stipend, IRA 3% match, PTO, and vacation. Starting wage will be based on experience.
