York General Proves The Value of Economic Development in the Community

May 3, 2024

The York County Development Corporation (YCDC) is excited to celebrate Economic Development Week (EDW) from May 6th to May 10th. This is a week where we highlight the role of economic development in the community and showcase how businesses and local leaders can shape the future of York County.

This year, YCDC is showcasing York General, which has been a staple in the community for over 100 years. The organization serves York patients of all ages through its five facilities.

“Whether you need a routine checkup or major surgery, York General is a leader in the region,” says Lisa Hurley, Executive Director of YCDC. “Not only is this healthcare organization an important employer in York County, but it significantly contributes to the quality of life for residents.”

Look at economic development from York General’s perspective to understand the value it provides and how it supports YCDC’s goals for growth.

YCDC Works With Employers to Grow York County

YCDC is a public-private, member-driven organization. Not only does it rely on the financial support of local businesses and communities, but also the voices and opinions of the community. When business leaders get involved in the economic development of York, they contribute to the future of this region. James Ulrich, Jr., Chief Executive Officer of York General, is a strong example of this. He has been part of the Executive Committee at YCDC since he arrived in York nearly eight years ago.  Under Ulrich’s leadership, York General has provided financial support for various economic development initiatives.

“I believe in economic development and how crucial it is to the ongoing success of communities and counties.,” says Ulrich. “When there are housing and childcare issues, York General will be at the table to roll up our sleeves and help work on the solution.”

YCDC listens to the pain points of employers, whether they are concerned about staffing and zoning or quality of life factors like education and housing. This input drives our economic development programs throughout the year.

York General’s Growth Has Ripple Effects Through the Region

YCDC appreciates Ulrich’s contributions to the executive committee because his organization affects countless residents and businesses in York County. Financially, York General is a taxpayer and major employer in the county with nearly 500 employees; however, it also provides indirect economic benefits.

“When people consider moving to Nebraska, the presence of York General can convince them to move to our region,” says Hurley. “Future residents know they will get the quality healthcare they need and won't have to travel to receive specialized services.”

Residents don’t have to work in healthcare or have any connections to York General to benefit from its facilities. The reputation of York General brings new customers, vendors, and partners to York County.

Economic Development Boosts York County and York General

One part of economic development that both Ulrich and YCDC are passionate about is bringing new families to the region. Not only will these residents breathe fresh life into York County, but they will also improve the quality of life in the region as a whole.

“As we continue to age as a community, we need to effectively recruit younger families into town,” says Ulrich. “We also need to successfully re-recruit those individuals, more established in their careers, back to town to work in our growing businesses.”

These new families and employees represent the future of York County. Not only do they include healthcare staff, but also entrepreneurs, teachers, and small business owners who are inspired by the region.

Join YCDC and Sustainably Grow York County

York General proves that a single business in York County can contribute to economic development in several ways. Not only does the region benefit financially from this organization, but the quality of life of residents improves as well.

Have a voice in York County’s future and join YCDC today. Whether you are a major employer in the region or a small business just starting out, your opinions matter.
