Director of Accounting
Description
The Director of Accounting provides leadership for the college’s accounting and financial reporting functions, ensuring responsible stewardship of resources in support York University’s mission. This role oversees day-to-day accounting operations, maintains strong internal controls, and partners closely with campus leadership to promote transparency, integrity, and fiscal sustainability.
Responsibilities
• Manage and oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including but not limited to: general ledger, bank reconciliations, accounts payable, payroll accounting, and fixed assets
• Support accounting and reporting for gifts, grants, and donor-restricted and endowment funds in accordance with nonprofit standards and donor intent
• Prepare monthly and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP and FASB standards for private nonprofit institutions
• Coordinate year-end close and serve as a liaison for annual financial audits
• Design, implement, maintain and strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, and financial procedures
• Ensure compliance with tax, regulatory, and statutory reporting requirements
• Support the Vice President of Finance and university leadership with budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and financial analysis
• Collaborate with the Business Office staff, Advancement, and other departments on financial matters
• Identify opportunities to improve financial processes and systems appropriate for a small-college environment
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, preferably with a CPA designation
• Accounting and/or financial management knowledge and/or experience
• Knowledge regarding financial statements, audits, and financial compliance
• Strong analytical, detailed, organizational, and communication skills
• Preferable experience in nonprofit, higher education or faith-based organizations accounting
• Knowledgeable or willing to learn the Jenzabar ERP system
• Demonstrated leadership capabilities
• High level of integrity, stewardship, and ethical judgment
• Commitment to the mission and values of a faith-based educational institution
• Collaborative and able to work effectively across a close-knit campus community
