York Creative District is Blooming With New Ideas

The York Creative District is less than three years old, but is already spreading a spirit of creativity throughout the community. The organization was granted verified Creative District status by the Nebraska Arts Council (NAC) in 2023 and has since developed multiple events, both large and small, to increase residents' opportunities to engage with the arts.

“I always say that beauty and art will save the world,” says Dr. Clark Roush, Endowed Chair for the Performing Arts at York University. “It’s about our humanity. We are forming communities within communities.”

Reaching verified status came with a $10,000 grant from the NAC, and the funds were divided into various projects, including a major cultural arts festival. Now, the York Creative District is growing with more people volunteering and new funding sources opening up. 

The District Accomplished a Lot in Its First Years

The York Creative District Advisory Board meets quarterly and reviews arts events in the area. It also organizes new events and meet-ups, ranging from local performances to the development of micro-murals. Dr. Roush chairs the advisory board but says he doesn’t manage the members and volunteers who participate. Once the board approves their projects, they have autonomy to run with them.

“I’m the administrator of the district and the university representative, but there are meetings where I don’t say anything that isn’t meeting logistics specific,”  says Dr. Roush. “Because this isn’t about my personal agenda.”

These efforts are paying off. In recognition of its good work, the NAC recently awarded the York Creative District $96,653 to support the performing arts and enhance public art offerings in the area. A large portion of these funds will go toward improvements to the City Auditorium and Yorkshire Theater.

The York Creative District has developed an online presence to reach residents interested in the arts. Dr. Roush wants to establish an arts calendar showcasing events around the county. The District is Starting to Receive New Project Proposals

As the York Creative District becomes known in the community, more people and organizations are reaching out with ideas. The District has partnered with the local women’s prison to create a mural to beautify spaces in common areas. Dr. Roush talks about groups putting together poetry readings in a local coffee shop, schools wanting to add murals, and even speculation about an open-air performance space for the community in the future. Now that residents see creative events happening in York, they want to bring their ideas and artistic visions to life.

“We decided as an advisory board to do one big event every other year,” says Roush. “That way, if any of our organizers get burned out, they have time to find a replacement.”

Residents with ideas or who want to get involved can attend advisory board meetings for the York Creative District. The organization is also always seeking donations for its events.

The York Creative District Plays a Role in Talent Attraction 

Dr. Roush sees the value of investing in the arts from an economic development perspective. When families are considering moving somewhere, they look at various aspects, including the art scene. York County already has plenty of opportunities to participate in team sports, and now it has events and organizations for art lovers. Art investment can attract companies to York by showcasing that this is a vibrant, well-rounded community.

Additionally, art events can be economic drivers. The multicultural arts festival attracted 400 people, bringing vendors, performers, crafters, and food trucks from across the region. This brought new people to York, leading to hotel stays and spending at local restaurants and shops.

In the long run, the arts support York County’s local workforce. A recent study by researchers at the University of Nebraska Kearney found that arts and music programs increased student buy-in and reduced absenteeism. Getting students to attend school is the first step in helping them learn so they have the knowledge and skills to thrive as adults.
