Why York County is a Good Place to Do Business

July 12, 2021

York County is a good place to do business. The county’s central location is just 45 minutes from Lincoln, Nebraska, while offering the convenience of a rural location - namely no traffic and lower costs of doing business. Being rural has other advantages as well, such as adjacency to the farmers producing raw materials used in food manufacturing and energy production. Corteva, a global seedcorn manufacturer, is just one example of companies benefiting from this proximity to Nebraska’s farming community.

When it comes to talent, York County has 210,698 workers in a 7 county laborshed. Traditionally an agricultural and manufacturing community, York County’s residents know how to work hard and have the skills to be productive and dependable workers. That’s not all. While in high school, students participate in career activities. YCDC offers many talent initiatives, and the K-12 schools work on connecting students with businesses from middle school to high school. Students can begin working for local companies right away or attend York College, where students gain the skills to become business leaders and work in areas like business administration, accounting, agribusiness, communications, education, biology, criminal justice and engineering, to name a few. In addition, Southeast Community College York Learning Center focuses on business and workforce development with a mix of business/workforce, leisure, and credit courses.

Why York County is a Good Place to Do Business

Northwest WarehouseIn addition to our convenient location and strong talent supply, York County benefits businesses in other ways that include:

#1 We have available industrial space and existing buildings

Due to construction costs, many companies are choosing to lease existing space to meet their immediate needs. York County can deliver. The SWB Industrial Park, for example, has existing warehouse space that has been recently renovated, includes state of the art sprinkler systems and is ready for occupancy.

#2 The York County virtual spec building is ready for development

York County has a 34-acres site ready to go. This site is ideal for a company headquarters or major expansion. Located in an Opportunity Zone and Redevelopment Area, the site qualifies for multiple incentives. With a comprehensive diligence report and master plan complete, the virtual site building can be constructed faster than a traditional development.

#3 York County is affordable

With housing and property prices skyrocketing throughout the country, many business owners are looking for locations that are affordable for their workers. York County delivers. Our cost of living is below the national average, making it easier for employees to buy a home and settle down.

#4 Our quality of life is high

Think that all Nebraska has to offer is rolling corn fields? Think again. York County is home to York College and we benefit from their cultural and sports activities. This means year round entertainment. Our community swimming pools, hiking, trail biking, fishing, golf and hunting all provide fun outdoor recreation and assets like the Yorkshire Playhouse entertain us. Learn more here.

#5 York County offers proximity to major markets

Basing a manufacturing, distribution or energy company in a major city can come with major headaches such as a lack of industrial space, high costs, lots of traffic and challenges getting permits. Businesses moving to York County can eliminate these headaches while benefiting from proximity to major markets. From York County, shipments can be trucked to 90% of the lower 48 states in 2 days or less.
