YCDC Begins Scheduling Business Retention & Expansion (BRE) Interviews
By Lisa Hurley, Executive Director, York County Development Corporation
At York County Development Corporation (YCDC), our work is driven by one simple belief: the businesses already here are the backbone of our local economy. That’s why we are launching a new round of Business Retention & Expansion (BRE) interviews, and I’d like to personally invite you to take part.
Why we do BRE interviews
In economic development, BRE interviews are an industry best practice — and for good reason. Communities across the country use them because they provide a clear, accurate picture of what businesses need to thrive. Most new jobs and investments don’t come from new companies moving in; they come from the ones already here. When we understand the opportunities and challenges facing York County businesses, we can work together to make this a place where they can grow.
These conversations give us much more than a snapshot in time. They help us spot trends, uncover opportunities, and identify risks before they become bigger issues. For example, if several businesses are struggling with workforce shortages or supply chain constraints, we can bring the right partners to the table to address those challenges. On the other hand, when we see opportunities, like a company exploring export markets or considering expansion, we can connect them with tools, funding, and resources to make it happen.
Shaping YCDC’s services
What we learn through these conversations directly shapes our work at YCDC. In fact, some of our most impactful initiatives, such as housing development projects and our talent attraction programs, came from feedback shared during past BRE interviews. Businesses told us they were struggling to recruit and retain workers due to limited housing options, so we made it a priority to help close that gap.
We’ve also used insights from BREs to connect businesses with funding opportunities, export assistance, workforce programs, and other resources that may not have been on their radar. These aren’t just interviews; they’re action steps toward solving problems and unlocking new possibilities.
What you can expect
Over the next few weeks, Michelle from our team will be reaching out to schedule interviews, which will be conducted by either myself or our Development Coordinator, Emily. These conversations are informal but purposeful. We’ll ask questions about your business, your goals, and any challenges you’re facing.
And most importantly: your responses are confidential. We take privacy seriously. We don’t share individual feedback. Instead, we compile the information and present aggregated findings to our Board and community leaders. These insights guide local decision-making, helping YCDC and our partners target resources where they’re needed most.
Why your participation matters
These interviews are more than a “check-in.” They are a direct line of communication between you and those of us working every day to strengthen York County’s economy. Your input helps us:
- Identify trends, like emerging workforce or infrastructure needs.
- Spot opportunities, such as expansion, training, or export support.
- Assess risks early, so we can connect you with solutions before problems grow.
- Advocate effectively, using real, on-the-ground business insights and stories to secure funding and influence policies that benefit our employers.
When you participate, you’re shaping the future of YCDC’s programs and partnerships. Help us build a business environment where you and your peers can succeed.
If you want to participate this year, and don’t receive a call or email, reach out to Michelle, and if you do receive a call or email from Michelle to schedule a BRE interview, I encourage you to say yes. These conversations are one of the most valuable tools we have for ensuring York County remains a great place to do business, and an even better place to grow.
