October 21, 2025
The entrepreneurial spirit was alive and thriving at the 2025 SPARK Small Business and Start-Up Pitch Contest, hosted by the York County Development Corporation (YCDC) on October 9 at York University’s Cornerstone Room. The event drew an audience of community members, business leaders, and aspiring entrepreneurs, all eager to watch local innovators share their visions for growth and impact.
This year’s winners were Doug Rood Photography, recognized in the Small Business category, and Lighthouses Lead, honored as the Start-Up category winner. Each demonstrated exceptional creativity, purpose, and community-minded leadership—key traits that embody what SPARK stands for.
The contest gave each business seven minutes to pitch to a panel of three distinguished judges with deep experience in business, leadership, and development. Participants were evaluated on the clarity of their business model, growth strategy, community impact, and use of potential prize funds.
Doug Rood Photography, a well-known creative presence in York County, impressed the judges with his innovative approach to capturing community and business stories through visual art. His business continues to expand its reach, offering professional photography services that help showcase local businesses, families, and events in a pop-up shop.
Lighthouses Lead, a start-up with a mission centered on connection across generations, stood out for its forward-thinking model that combines mentorship and connection-based programming. Their pitch highlighted a strong vision for building relationships and communities through training and empowerment initiatives.
Both winners received:
- 💲**$3,000 Cash Prize** to support business growth and innovation
- 🎙️Marketing Package from Rural Radio Network – York to elevate brand visibility
- 🤝YCDC Support & Retention Membership for a full year, connecting them to local business resources, advocacy, and networking opportunities
“This event continues to showcase the depth of talent and entrepreneurial drive within York County,” said Emily Perry, Development Coordinator for YCDC. “Every participant brought something unique to the table—whether they’re launching a new idea or growing an existing business, SPARK provides the connections, visibility, and resources they need to take that next step.”
Participants included Brim & Design, Caring Rides, Crossroads Network, Doug Rood Photography, and Lighthouses Lead, representing both emerging and established ventures across diverse industries. Each contestant had access to mentorship opportunities prior to the competition, working with YCDC and local business professionals to refine their presentations, strengthen their business plans, and prepare for sustainable growth.
Now in its second year, SPARK has quickly become a cornerstone event in York County’s small business ecosystem—encouraging innovation, collaboration, and economic vitality. The program not only awards financial support but also provides ongoing mentorship, exposure, and connections that help businesses thrive long after the contest ends.
