This hybrid role enables Wessels Living History Farm to maintain its living museum grounds while bringing history to life for visitors. It directly advances the farm’s educational mission and ensures the property remains welcoming, educational, and true to its historical roots.
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities:
• Maintenance & Groundskeeping
- Perform routine upkeep: mowing, landscaping, weeding, painting, repairs, and cleaning across historic buildings and grounds.
- Maintain hands-on exhibits—garden plots, animal enclosures, visitor amenities (restrooms, picnic areas, gift shop), and pathways—ensuring both historical authenticity and safety.
- Assist during seasonal events (e.g. Living History Days, tractor swap meets) with preparation, set-up, clean-up, and infrastructure maintenance
- Educational Interpretation & Visitor Engagement
- Act as a costumed interpreter during tours—demonstrating early 20th-century farming tasks such as churning butter, shelling corn, milking cows, gathering eggs, and operating antique equipment.
- Engage and assist school groups, families, and individual guests with interactive activities tailored to various age groups.
- Provide historical context for the 1920s buildings and farm equipment.
- Uphold an immersive, hands-on experience where visitors are encouraged to learn by participating—climbing on tractors, feeding animals, picking produce, playing old-fashioned lawn games
• Safety & Accessibility
- Monitor guest safety during interactive activities and on-site exploration.
- Ensure ADA accessibility and upkeep of modern restrooms in multiple locations
- Report or address potential hazards promptly.
- Special Projects & Volunteer Coordination
- Support volunteer-driven improvements—painting, landscaping, playground maintenance, visitor area enhancements—especially during organized community service events
- Collaborate with the farm’s director and volunteers to maintain inviting displays, brochures, seating, and interpretive materials.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
- Genuine interest in agriculture, history, education, or living history interpretation.
- Experience with basic landscaping, property maintenance, or facility upkeep.
- Comfortable engaging the public, working with children, and performing live demonstrations.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with a proactive, visitor-centric mindset.
- Ability to lift moderate loads, be active outdoors in varying weather, and assist in physically demanding tasks.
- Flexibility to work weekends or special event days during peak seasons (May–October)
- Preferred (But Not Required):
• Previous experience in historical interpretation, agricultural education, or with antique machinery.
• Familiarity with 1920s Nebraska farm practices and lifestyle.
• First Aid/CPR certification.
• Ability to assist with small event coordination or guest services.
